Best places to visit in syros

Syros is known for its culture and long history, which starts from the ancient times and slowly unfolds through industrial heritage, church tradition and the roots of rebetik songs. A story that can be found in the sights and exhibits of the island’s museums.

The town hall of Hermoupolis

The town hall of Hermoupolis in Miaouli square is one of the largest and most impressive town halls in all of Greece, that combines 3 different architectural style and it is worth to visit it during your stay in Syros.It was built in 1876 under the supervision of Ernst Ziller. This is a unique building with a three-storey facade on the side of the square and two-storey facade on the back side of the building which bears striking details, two wings with five vertical window shafts left and right, overhangs, towers and more generally a typical architecture.

Vaporia

The magnificent settlement of Syros named ‘Vaporia’ that continues to be renowned as the most prestigious district in the eastern part of Syros. unique high-ceiling mansions by the sea with striking paintings, woodcut doors, marble balconies, wooden floors and unparalleled details create a stunning neighbourhood of captain’s mansions, of marvellous home-boats “vaporia” that seems to hover above the rocks. This is a beautiful and picturesque area with small beaches suitable for swimming and tranquil escapes. While in the area, it is worth visiting the Church of St. Nicholas the rich dominating with its bell towers and walking through the paths with the neoclassical houses.

Apollon Theatre

The Apollon Municipal Theatre is a work of art that testifies the cultural development of Ermoupolis. Built in 1864 on Vardaka square in the heart of the town by the Italian architect Pietro Sampo the Municipal Theatre Apollon is considered by many a miniature of Scala di Milano. This is a two-storey building characterized by a simple architectural design on its exterior with dominant elements such as the marble on its basis. The interior of the theatre will certainly leave visitors in awe. Initially the interior of the theatre was composed of a 9×10 meters stage, wooden seats, handrails and velvet curtains. After the damages it suffered during the second world war the theatre had lost all of its glamour. From 1970 and until 2000 it began to be rebuilt according to the designs of Peter Pikionis and reopened for the first time in 2002. Today as one of the most impressive cultural centers of the Cyclades, the Apollon municipal theatre hosts numerous cultural events and festivals.

Ano Syros

Ano Syros is just 3.5 km away from the port of Ermoupolis, a distance worth covering on foot. A city characterized by countless steps that pass by the white houses and arches at the edge of the hill leading to the top of the village where the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George is situated. Offering lots of restaurants, taverns, cultural landmarks and attractions including the old Castle gate leading to the old town, the bust of the great traditional singer Markos Vamvakaris and the Town Hall.

The Markos Vamvakaris exhibition founded by people of Syros to honor the works of this exceptional songwriter. Located in the heart of Ano Syros so as to take visitors back in time through the voice, the lyrics and the life lead by this beloved “rempeti”, through his personal belongings, his photos, manuscripts and clothing through a half-hour documentary showcasing his life in the basement of the museum. Markos Vamvakaris was a voice perfectly intertwined with the “rebetiko” style of music succeeded in familiarizing all Greeks with the beauties of Syros with the most beloved song “Fragosyriani” thus showing his love for his homeland.

Industrial Museum

The Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli was founded in 2000 by the Center of Technical Culture and it is housed in 4 industrial buildings of the 19th century, the Kornilaki Tannery, the Skagiopoieio Anairoysi, the Velissaropoulou weaving mill, the Katsimanti paint factory against the General Hospital of Syros. The Museum hosts a collection of tools, equipment and machinery from the Golden industrial era from loukoumi workshops, to textile, tanning, printing, machinist’s craftsmanship and glass workshops as well as a digital audio and visual archives with testimonies from former workers, maps and plans, a three-dimensional representation of industrial buildings and artifacts from the wreck of the Patrice steamship. Among the exhibits one can also see the first legendary electric car Enfield 8000 constructed in Greece.

City Hall of Poseidonia

The City Hall of Poseidonia in Della Grazia, which also called Villa Tsiropina is a historical stone building, great sample of the summer residence of aristocrats during the 20th century that reflects the glamour of a bygone era. Is a true artwork curated by Tsiropina brothers A stunning Villa in Poseidonia with reception areas, lounges, dining rooms, fireplaces, bedrooms, storage rooms, kitchen areas and unique frescoes. The Villa is embraced by fragrant gardens and some auxiliary buildings. Today, Villa Tsiropina is a cultural multi-space that houses several municipal services of Syros-Ermoupoli while occasionally hosting exhibitions, theatre performances, lectures, conferences and other cultural events.
